Texas Rangers 2011 Season Preview

Support in Arlington has never been stronger, and baseball in Texas is fun, this means the Rangers have a lot to live up to after making it to the World Series in 2011. The offseason didn't go completely as planned as they did everything they could to retain Cliff Lee only to lose him to the Phillies. The Rangers are putting a good amount of pressure on CJ Wilson and Colby Lewis as well as a bullpen headed by Derek Holland and Tommy Hunter who put in an AL high 503 innings in 2010. They are hoping that Arthur Rhodes will help bolster the at times overworked bullpen. The Rangers are also counting on a resurgance of one time great Brandon Webb to help go deep into games.

The Rangers were at least able to squash the Michael Young drama for now and Adrian Beltre is an upgrade over Young at 3rd, but the cost may have been high. One thing you don't have to worry about with the Rangers is offense. With Ian Kinsler, Young, Nelson Cruz and Josh Hamilton, I am looking at the Rangers to hit the most home runs and score the most runs in the American League. It's going to be hard for any team to catch the Rangers in 2011, I think they will continue their success over the AL West, especially as most of the other teams really didnt make a lot of noise in the offseason.

Texas Rangers history

The Texas Rangers are a professional baseball team located in the Western Division of the American League. The Rangers started as a franchise in 1961 as an expansion team in Washington DC as the Washington Senators. After 10 lackluster seasons the team packed up and moved to Arlington, it's current home. In the early going in DC the Senators would average 90 losses per year and would only have 2 winning seasons in it's first 12 years, the first coming after hiring Ted Williams as the teams manager.

1972 would be the first year in Texas, and would be 2 years of 100+ losses before coming around in 1974 as a team. They would finish 2 in the West, post their first winning season as the Rangers, and be the first team in history to post a winning record after 2 consecutive 100 loss seasons. The Rangers would post a few good seasons until 1979 and it would be another 5 years before they would post another winning record after almost clinching their first playoff spot in the strike shortened 1981 season. The Rangers have notoriously suffered attendance problems because of the 100 degrees plus summer days. One of the traditions that the Rangers have to this day to battle that issue is to play mostly evening games on the weekends.

In 1995 in their new stadium the Rangers would win their first ever Division Title 24 long years after coming to Texas, but would lose to the Yankees 3-1. Manager Johnny Oates would again lead the Rangers to division titles in 1998 and 1999 losing both of them in sweeps again at the hand of the New York Yankees. It wouldn't be until 2010 that the Rangers would stamp their ticket back to the playoffs winning the AL West. They would face a tough Tampa Bay Rays team but would shock the Rays winning their first ever playoff series in their 50 years of existence. In the ALCS the Rangers would face their nemisis, New York Yankees, who has a combined 9-1 record against the Rangers in the playoffs. The Rangers would get their revenge winning their first ever AL pennant and first trip to the World series. Although they would win their first ever World Series game in Arlington, they would lose the series 4-1. The Ranger fans support has exploded and a Texas Rangers ticket is hard to come by these days. The Rangers have the talent in place now to continue their success and this time look to get back to the world series and be successful for years to come.
