Philadelphia Phillies 2011 Season Preview
The Phillies haven't had much of a chance to breath with the whirl wind offseason they had. If you haven't opened a paper or read a news site
somehow the Phillies swept in and was able to steal the coveted Cliff Lee from the Yankees and Rangers. This put the Phillies rotation as most
likely the best in the major leagues. I mean who want's to face Roy Halladay (2010 Cy Young Winner), Cliff Lee (2008 Cy Young Winner), Roy Oswalt (2005 NLCS MVP)
and if needed Cole Hamels (2008 NCLS and WS MVP) in a playoff series?
One of the gaps the Phillies are looking to fill is in right field, with the loss of Jason Werth to the Nationals, there is a ton of competition for the position.
Mayberry Jr, Ben Francisco, Ross Gload and Dominic Brown to name a few. It will be interesting to see how Charlie Manuel will have to adjust the lineup to compensate not only
for the loss of Jason Werth's power, but also a right handed bat in a lineup full of left handed batters. Another worry for the Phillies is their bullpen. The Phillies
in 2010 had a very Shaky pen, and although they resigned Contreras and Romero they also lost Chad Durbin and have a ton of very young relievers. Charlie will have to experiment
with using Kyle Kendrick in the pen as Blanton will most likely be the 5th starter. It doesn't seem the general manager Ruben Amaro was as worried about the bullpen as much as
the Phillies starting rotation has highest number of complete games over any other team.
Another area the Phillies have always been dominant in is offense. They hope that the loss of Werth who had plenty of trouble with RISP will not be missed. They should have a
completely healthy team going into spring training with Polanco, Utley, Rollins, Ibanez, Howard, Ruiz and Victorino all healed as each one of those players missed
a significant amount of time in 2010 with injuries. But this is also what makes the Phillies unique is they have alot of young players that can step up to fill in
and play well enough to win. Although they have traded alot of their good players away to get stars like Halliday and Lee, they still have quite a few
minor league prospects ranked in the top 100 for all minor league players. 2011 will be entertaing for Phillies fans, and it's important to buy your tickets early as
they have sold out our 100 consecutive games.
Philadelphia Phillies history
The Philadelphia Phillies are THE oldest one, one city franchise in all of American sports, a history that dates back to 1883. Early on the Phillies were known
as the Quakers adn their first home was known as Baker Bowl. The Phillies adpoted their current name in 1890 and it wasn't until 30 years later that the Phillies would
win their first pennant in 1915. For the next 30 years the Phillies would have only 1 winning season.
It wasn't until the team was purchased by William Cox in 1943 that the team saw a glimmer of respectable seasons. Although the Cox was found to be gambling on Baseball
fans responded by increased attendance and Phillies tickets became a commodity. Bob Carpenter picked up where he left off and focuses on future player development. Future Phillies stars were developed in the minor leagues like future hall of famers
Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts. The Phillies made their way to the World Series again in 1950 losing to the Dodgers while the local Philly native team the Philadelphia Athletics
finished last and consequently moved from Philadelphia a few years later leaving the Phillies as the lone baseball team in Philadelphia.
The Phillies returned to futility after 1950 World Series at one point losing 23 games in a row a record since 1900. Although a brief strong showing in 1963 and 64 the Phillies
squandered a 10 game lead with 12 games left to miss the playoffs, a record that stood until recently known as the "Phold of 64". The Phillies moved into Veteran Stadium in 1970 and
still remained at the bottom of the NL East until they won the division 3 straight years from 1976 - 1978 they finally made a strong push in the playoffs, and in 1980 behind many hall of fame
Phillies players like Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Pete Rose, Steve Carlton and Greg Luzinski squeezing by the Astros in a memorable series to win their first NL Pennant in 30 years. The Phillies
would end up beating the Kansas City Royals to capture their first World Series championship in team history. The Phillies would make it back to the World Series in 1983 but lose to the Orioles and following
another 10 years of last place finished, the Phillies found themselves back in the World Series in 1993.
The 1993 season was very memorable because the Phillies were picked to finish last in the NL East. They would beat the Braves in the NLCS to earn their 5th ever pennant but would lose to the Blue Jays
when Joe Carter hit a walk off home run of Mitch Williams to win the world series 4 games to 2. It took quite a few more years to regain a winning season as the Braves dominated the NL East for 14 straight
seasons. In 2007 after the Phillies lost their 10,000th game, a record that will most likely not be broken for a very long time, the Phillies won the NL East for the first time in 14 years, but would be swept
by the Colorado Rockies. 2008 would prove to be the year for the Phillies with players like Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino all of which were developed through their farm system, the Phils would
win the division for the 2nd year in a row, cruise through the playoffs and upset the Dodgers to win the pennant and subsequently face another young talented team in the Tampa Bay Rays. The Phillies proved to be to much for
the Rays and would win their 2nd ever world series, 1st since 1980 and first for the city of Philadelphia since 1983. Late Hall of Famer Harry Kalas would make the announcement over the radio, it would prove to be the last time
he would announce a Phillies playoff game.
Since their World Series win in 2008 the Phillies have won the NL East 2 more times, they would return to the World Series to face the New York Yankees but lose the series 4-2. In 2010
the Phils won their divisional series but lost in the NLCS to the eventual World Series champs. Through the season the team saw their first ever perfect game thrown by Roy Halliday, he followed this by throwing only the 2nd
ever no hitter in Playoff history. The future looks bright for the Phillies after 100 straight sellouts, and new top pitcher Cliff Lee, the rest of the NL East has alot of catching up to do.
