New York Mets 2011 Season Preview

For a team with the audience that the Mets has available, they seem to fall under the category of barely even trying when it comes to their moves in the offseason. What makes matters worse for the Mets is it seems that everyone else in the division has gotten better. For the Mets they are stuck is a tough position because they are unable to unload Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo and are stuck with little money to spend until after the season is over when they will be able to dump $60 million worth of salaries. Johan Santana is struggling to finish an entire season, their prized closer is dealing with a ton of offseason issues, and their manager was fired. They are looking for some direction after the 2011 season.

In a sense what many have said about the Mets in 2011 is they've put themselves in a no lose situation. If they don't play well then it won't be seen as a suprise, but if they do play hard, they are now worse for wear. The Mets were able to scrape from the bottom with the little money they did have and pick up Taylor Buchholz, Chris Young, Willie Harris and Scott Hairston. So they did do well with what they had, but in a division with the powerhouse Phillies and the up and coming Braves, it may be hard to compete in 2011.

New York Mets history

The New York Mets were born in 1957 after the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants relocated to California. The departure of these teams left the largest city in United States with 1 team, and no teams in the National League. The Mets took on the color of the blue dodgers and the orange of the Giants and took their name from the 19th century NY Metroplitans club. The Mets played almost all of their games at the Shea Stadium until 2009 when they moved to their current home at the Citi Field.

The Mets have a lot of great memories in their history as a franchise. They have won 2 world series titles, 4 national league pennants and 5 NL East titles. The Mets have the most World Series appearances of any expansion team, and are tied with the most World Series championships with the Blue Jays and Marlins. The Mets have always been a popular alternative to the Yankees in New York and until 1999 held the record for fan attendance in New York drawing nearly 2.7 million in 1970.

The NY Mets started out with a stretch of tough seasons posting a one of the worst records in league history at 40-120. The Mets rebounded in 1969 winning their first World Series over the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. In 1973 the Mets again made to the World Series and going 7 games before losing to the Athletics. After trading coveted pitcher Tom Seaver the Mets dropped to the bottom of the NL East for a few years until shocking the Astros in NLCS in 1986. In a moment that will forever live in infamy of today's Red Sox fans, the Mets where within 1 strike of losing the World Series before a would be ground out went between first base mens Bill Buckner's legs to give the Mets the victory in game 6, before going on to win game 7 and their 2nd World Series title. Although there has been a couple more NLCS appearances, and another world series against cross town rivals New York Yankees, the Mets have yet to recapture the World Series title since 1986. The Mets have also posted what is considered today as the biggest collapse in Baseball history after leading by 7.5 games with 17 games left before losing the division to the Phillies.
