Minnesota Twins 2011 Season Preview

The Minnesota Twins have always had pretty good starting pitching, and in 2010 that didn't change, but what will change in 2011 is the bullpen. With the loss of Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain, Jon Rauch and Brian Fuentes the bullpen will rely heavly on Matt Caps and the return on Joe Nathan which plenty remains to be seen if he can come back strong. Joe Mauer will always be good for offense and keeping Jim Thome is always a good vibe for the clubhouse, but will concussion issues affect Justin Morneau for some time?

Another question is how much will the Twins be affected by the departure of Orlando Hudson and JJ Hardy the deadly 2nd base shortstop combination. The Twins are hoping Alexi Casilla and Tsuyoshi Nishioka will fill in nicely. The Twins will definitely be competitive but I could see them in a tight battle all the way till the end in a tough AL Central division.

Minnesota Twins history

The Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball team located in the Central Division of the American League. THe Twins started as a franchise in 1894 located in Kansas City until 1901 when they become one of the 8 charter franchises of the American located in Washington D.C. The team would remain in DC until 1960 as the Senators until the League granted Minneapolis an expansion team and the Senators moved to Minnesota to become the Twins.

Although the Senators were mediocre at best throughout their history before moving to MN, they did enjoy success in the early 20's. They would make it to and win the 1924 World Series over the New York Giants in 7 games. The would win their second pennant in a row in 1925 but lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Senators would make it back to the 1933 World Series but lost to the Giants in 5. After many years of last place finishes, and only contending for the pennant 1 time in the next 30 years, they needed a change of environment and thats what prompted the move to Minnesota.

The Twins had immediate success and fans were flocking for a chance to get a Minnesota Twins Ticket. The Twins would win 91 games in 1962 and 102 in 1965 to bring them to the World Series, but ultimately lose in 7 games to Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers. The Twins would then make it to the American League Championship Series in 1969 and 70 but lose both times to the Baltimore orioles. The team would struggle for nearly a decade to stay around .500 and would move into the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome to share with the Vikings. Until 1987 when Kirby Puckett led the Twinkies over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987 and would become the first team to finish last the year before making it to the World Series in 1991 defeating the Braves. After a long stretch of losing seasons the Twins have won their division the last 2 years and have a core of young players that are some of the best in the league and are looking to get back to the promise land.
