Los Angeles Angels 2011 Season Preview

The Angels by many accounts did not have a great offseason, but they did sure up a few holes, and it's never smart to count the Angels out as title contenders. Without even having to shop around, they their lineup will see a huge improvement with the return of Kendry Morales after his broken leg in 2010. Their existing pitching rotation will keep them in contention with Dan Haren, Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana with Joel Pineiro pull up the rear.

Probably the biggest hickup would be the Angels taking Vernon Wells who had an enormously overpaid contract with the Blue jays that the Angels took over. Scott Downs and Hisanori Takahasi will help bolster the bullpen, but they came at what some would consider higher than market value. The Angels did miss out on Carl Crawford, but they always find a way to be competitive. Look for the Angels to have another average season, but will be hard for them to compete with the Rangers in the division

Los Angeles Angels history

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are a professional baseball team located in the Western Division of the American League. The Angels were founded as an expansion team in 1961 in Los Angeles. The team would play in the LA Dodgers newly built stadium through the 1965 season changing their name the California Angels before moving into their current home Anaheim Stadium in 1966. The would change their name again the 1995 to the Anaheim Angels only to change it again in 2005 to include Los Angeles in their name to attract the 2nd biggest media market in the United States, today they are know as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The early years of ownership by Gene Autry would show a team that was always competitive, they would never lose more than 95 games, but they were never able to be competitive. It would be almost 20 years before the Halos would win their first Division title and would lose to a tough Baltimore Orioles teams in the American League Championship game. After a couple of off years the Angels would return to the ALCS where they would take the first 2 games of the series against the Milwaukee Brewers, but would lose 3 straight to again miss out on the World Series. 1986 would prove to be another hearbreaking ending as the Angels would win the West and in the ALCS would 3 outs away from their first trip the World Series leading the Red Sox 3-1 in the series. The Angels would blow a 3 run lead in the 9th giving up 4 runs and the Red Sox would win 3 straight to take the series.

It would take 16 years of mediocre and poor season before the Angels would return to the playoffs, this time as a wild card team. The Angels would battle their way through the playoffs winning their first American League Pennant in 2002 to face the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. After going down 3-2 in the series, and down by 5 runs in the 7th game of game 6, the Halos would rattle of 6 runs to win the game and win game 7 to claim their first ever World Series title. The popularity of the Angels was at an all time high, fans were scrambling for a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ticket. Over the next 7 years from 2003 - 2009 the Angels would win the NL West 5 times, they would lose all 5 trips to the post season, 4 out of 5 times to the eventual World Series Champs, 3 times losing to the Red Sox. The last couple of years have been rebuilding for the Angels and they are looking to get back to the World Series and capture their 2nd title.
