Kansas City Royals 2011 Season Preview
The Royals were a little busy in the offseason and looked to open their wallets a little more than KC fans are used too. After losing Zach Greinke to the Brewers and freeing up 12 million in salary from Gil Meche, the Royals had some money to play with signing Billy Bulter to a 3 years $30 million deal, bringing back Bruce Chen and signing Jeff Francis. Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur have been average at best lately, but do improve their lineup overall.
It's really tough to tell, because a lot of the players the Royals have are young and unproven, the veterans they brought in have been good, but not lately. Will the team gel? My guess would be that it's a step in the right direction for the Royals, I see them inching closer to .500 and finishing in front of the Indians, but have a long way to go to reach the White Sox and Twins.
Kansas City Royals history
The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team located in the Central Division of the American League. They were established in 1969 and would find success pretty quickly into their franchise history. The would enjoy their first winning season in 1971 finishing 2nd place and in 1976 would win the first of 3 straight AL Western Division titles. However the Royals would lose all 3 of those years in the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees.
1980 would pin the Royals against their arch nemesis New York Yankees where they would prevail in a 3 game sweep. They would ultimately fall the Philadelphia Phillies in 6 games after making it to their first World Series. During the 1983 season, noone can forget the famous 'pine tar incident' in which George Brett had his 2 run homer called out before of pine tar more than 18 inches about the bottom of the bat, this was off of Yankees Pitcher Goose Gossage, further fueling the rivalry.
Perhaps the most memorable year in Kansas City history was 1985 when the Royals were down 3-1 in the ALCS before coming back to win 3 straight and advance to the World Series. Know as the 'I-70 Series' against same state club St Louis Cardinals, the Royals again found theirselves in a 3-1 hole when in game 6 down 1-0 in the 9th the Royals would score twice to win, and then dominate game 7 in an 11-0 shelling to win their first every World Series title. During the late 80's Royals fans went crazy for a Kansas City Royals ticket but are looking for the Royals to rebound from 3 straight 100 loss seasons and quite a few years at the bottom of the AL Central.
