Florida Marlins 2011 Season Preview

For the last couple of year the Marlins have made the eventual division winners sweat as they stayed competitive throughout most of the year. During the offseason the Marlins had to trade away one of their best offensive weapons Dan Uggla, who led the team in home runs, OPS, runs scored and RBIs. Fortunatley for the Marlins they are one of the best teams in the lead at recruiter young players and making smart trades. The Marlins according to many had one of the best under-the-radar offseasons in the League. The Marlins who had what many considered to be one of the worst bullpens in the league, upgraded significantly when they signed Randy Choate, and they are hoping their gamble for Javier Vazquez pays off as he has a lot of upward potential.

The Fish have mostly filled the loss of offense from Uggla by picking up Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison. One of the biggest questions is whether off season pickup Chris Coghlan can cover the wide open center field in Sun Life Stadium. The Marlins shouldn't have any issues with starting pitching with studs like Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco to pick up the slack. Look for the Marlins to be competitive in the NL East, but it's hard to say whether their offense will be able to handle heavily stacked pitching teams like the Phillies and the Braves.

Florida Marlins history

The Florida Marlins became a franchise as an expansion team in 1993. Although their history is a short one, they have enjoyed a great deal of success. Currently they are in the history books for a couple of statistics. The Marlins have only made the playoffs twice in their existence, but have won the World Series both times. They are the only professional sports team to win a championship every time they've made the playoffs, in their case 2. Another interesting fact is that the Marlins have never won their division, making the playoffs both years as the wild card team.

The Marlins currently play in the National League in the Eastern Division. A highly competitive division with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. In 1991 MLB announced it would be adding 2 new teams and it became apparent that Florida would be the home of one of those teams. Wayne Huizenga who recently purchased 50% of the Miami Dolphins won the bid and purchased the expansion license for $85 million, some of the early considerations for the team was the Florida Flamingos, thankfully that was overruled. The Marlins have played all their years at Sun Life Stadium and in 2012 will move into Marlins Stadium and change their name to the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins as a Franchise were withing the top 5-10 in attendance for their first 5 years of existence and since then have had some of the worst attendance figures in the league. Although they are normally competitive in the NL East, they are the only team to lose 100 games the year after winning a World Series (1997-1998). The Marlins are also notorious for having a great farm system, because they are a low budget franchise, they rely on young players to compete, and in 2003 after years of disappointing results, the Marlins won their 2nd world series. The team included a young cast of players that are all-stars around the league, including Josh Beckett, AJ Burnett, Miguel Cabrera, Luis Castillo, Jeff Conine, Derrek Lee, Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre, Brad Penny and Dontrelle Willis.
