Cincinnati Reds 2011 Season Preview

The Reds had a breakout season in 2010 making it to the playoffs through a very strong offense and an excellent bullpen. So what do the Reds do? They figured they would work on the current team, Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Cueto, locking them up vs looking at free agents. Though they lost Arthur Rhodes they are looking forward to having Aroldis Chapman and his 105 mph fastball. The Reds are also going to see a net gain after the acquisition of the 2010 World Series MVP Edgar Renteria and adding competition for a new starter with the acquistion of Dontrelle Willis.

The Reds really have the nucleus that brought them their first success since the 70's, and are hoping that all of the stay healthy enough to get even further into the playoffs in 2011. Look to see the Reds make another strong run in 2011 and are a front runner to win the NL Central again, althrough the Brewers might have something to say about that.

Cincinnati Reds history

The Cincinnati Reds are another one of the oldest teams in Major League baseball getting their start in 1882 as the Cincinnati Red Stockings playing for the National League. They are one of the few National Teams to enjoy a good amount of success in their franchise history, tied for 7th most World Series titles at 5. The Reds currently play at Great American Ball Park and after a few decades of mediocrity returned to the playoffs in 2010 winning the Central division. This of course has returned popularity for baseball in Cincinnati and sent Cincinnati Red Ticket holders scrambling for more tickets.

In their early history before moving to the national league the Red can be traced back to 1869 around the time that they won 130 straight games, an unprecedented number even today and even posted the only perfect season in baseball history in 1869. The Reds won their first NL Pennant in 1919 and then won their first championship the same year. It wasn't until 1933 that the Reds began to develop a farm system and expand their fan base. This led to their 2nd pennant before losing the World Series in 1939 but would return as NL champions and this time win their first World Series in over 20 years. After a series of bad season, and bad trades the Reds farm system would finally start producing players like Pete Rose to guide what is know today as "The Big Red Machine".

Under new manager Sparky Anderson the Reds breezed to the World Series in 1970 before losing to the Orioles. The Reds would return in 1973 before losing a tight series to the Athletics. In 1975 the Reds boasted players like Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Ken Griffey Sr and motored their way to the 1975 world series. They would win in a 7 game thrilling series in which Carlton Fisk won in walk off fashion to force a game 7, the Reds have not since lost another World Series game since then , winning 9 straight since then. They would sweep the playoffs and the World Series in 1976 and became the first NL team to win consecutive Word Series titles since 1921-22 and the 75-76 Reds were considered one of the best teams ever. 1990 saw the last time the Reds have been to the World Series, sweeping the A's. The Reds have a ton of new talent and are heading into the post 2010 season win the most success they've had in 20 years are looking to build on that in the coming years.
