Chicago Cubs 2011 Season Preview
The Cubs had what many would call a pretty successful offseason. The Cubs struggled last season under Pinella, so perhaps the biggest acquisition for them is hiring full time interim manager Mike Quaid whom the teams finished the season under with a 24-13 record.
The Cubs definitely improved their offense and pitching as well. The addition of Matt Garza should help improve a pitching lineup that relies heavily on Ryan Dempster. Marmol has another season under his belt, but can he shake off some of those rough starts, that remains to be seen, and the Cubs are hoping a resurgence of Kerry Wood will bring a veteran presence for the young bullpen staff. Carlos Pena had a rough year last year, but I have a feeling he will like seeing NL pitching and love hitting in the hitter friendly ballpark at Wrigley. He should compliment great hitters in the lineup like Aramas Ramirez and Starlan Castro. The biggest problem for the Cubs is that they play in a pretty good division where the Brewers improved, the Cardinals are always contendars and the Reds are still good. I see a vast improvement over the 2010 final standings, but I think there are still a year or 2 away from winning the NL Central.
Chicago Cubs history
The Chicago Cubs are the oldest franchise in all major sports that currently play in its original city. The Cubs also have not won the World Series in 102 years, by far the biggest title drought in all of sports. The Cubs currently play in the National League conference in Central Division. They play their games at Wrigley Field in Chicago Illinois, which they have called home since 1916 and is the 2nd oldest park in Major League baseball still standing.
The Cubs have always been a very popular teach, even now a Chicago Cubs ticket is likely to come aftermarket, as their fan base is one of the most loyal in all of American sports. The early years for the cubs were that of great success. Getting their start in 1871 they were a National dynasty until 1902. At a time when the National League penant was like the World Series of today, the Cubs (also knows as the "Colts" at the time) would win 6 NL penants from 1876-86. The Cubs of today would get their name in 1902 and from 1905 - 1912 the Cubs would win 4 NL penants, they would make it to 3 straight World Series winning 2 of them, becoming the first team to make it to 3 straight, and win back to back WS titles. During that span they also set a record that stands today with a winning percentage of (.763) winning 116 games.
The Cubs have always been a successful club and have since won quite a few NL penants but during the late 1920's and early 30's fell to their AL Rival NY Yankees, where many remember "The Shot" called by Babe Ruth at Wrigley Field. The Cubs and their fans are still this day believers in the "Curse of the Billy Goat". In Game 4 of the 1945 World Series Billy Sainis was ejected from the game because of the odor from his goat and muttered the worlds "The Cubs, they aint gonna win no more". The Cubs would lose that game, lost the series and have been back to the World Series Since then. The Cubs were within 1 game of the WS in 2003 before the infamous fan interference and spiraling the Cubs to blow a 3-1 series lead and fail to make the World Series. 2008 showed a strong Cubs club who would fall to the underdog Dodgers. Cubs fans remain optimistic that they will soon make it back to the World Series and 2011 they have the lineup to make that happen.
