Boston Red Sox 2011 Season Preview

The Red sox by many accounts had a pretty darn successful 2010 offseason. The really wanted to make some changes after not reaching the post season. Step in huge acquisitions of Carl Crawford, the speedy oufielder, and slugger Adrian Gonzalez. If Gonzalez thought he liked the the spacious PETCO park, wait until he hits in Fenway Park. The one worry for the Sox lineup is the overwhelming percentage of left handed hitters, while adding 2 more lefties in Crawford and Gonzalez, but not to worry Boston finished 2nd in homers in 2010.

The Sox also are looking to get back fully healed Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis both missing significant time in 2010 with injuries. Although the Red Sox starters are big time players, the 2010 is by many considered at disappointment. But Josh Beckett and John Lackey are veterans who should bounce back along with Matsuzaka. The addition of Dan Wheeler should also provide some much needed support to a weaking and aging bullpen, complimented Bard and Papelbon nicely. Look for the Red Sox, who failed to reach 90 wins for only the 2nd time in the last 9 season and saw their rating plummet, to surpass 90 wins and make a serious run at the AL East title.

Boston Red Sox history

The Boston Red Sox are a professional Major League Baseball team that plays in the American League Conference in the east division. They were founded in 1901 and were 1 of 8 charter franchises for the upstart American League. Their beginnings as a franchise marked a ton of success defeating the Pittsburgh Pirate and winning the 1903 World Series 2 years after their start and winning 4 more championships until 1918. That is where the Red Sox would start the biggest championship draught for a team in baseball history, not winning another World Series until 2004. This was also known as the "Curse of the Bambino" in which Boston traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees and didn't defeat the Yankees in the playoffs for a century.

The Red Sox although they had the championship drought have always been a perennial playoff contendar and have a very popular fan base. The Sox currently play in the oldest MLB stadium of all teams, and have been in Fenway Park since 1912. And although the stadium built then would have never know the popularity of the Sox and MLB today, the Red Sox have sold out every game since May 2003, a stat that spans over 7 years. The Red Sox have been one of the most successful teams over the past decade, winning 2 world series titles in 2 opportunities and have missed the playoffs only twice.

2004 will forever live in infamy for Red Sox and Yankees fans alike. Boston had not beaten the Yankees in the playoffs since 1904, it just seems impossible, and with Boston down 3 games to 0 it seemed inevitable that it would happen again. That's when Boston realed off 8 straight wins, 4 to defeat the Yankees and 4 to sweep the Cardinals and win their first World Series since 1918. The drought was no more. The Yankees Redsox rivalry has often been called the biggest rivalry in all of sports history.

There have been many more pivotal moments in Bostons history, included Bill Buchner who let a grounder escape him as Boston was within 1 out of winning the 1986 world series, and went on to lose. There is also the "Boston Massacre" and many other years of devestating losses to the rivaled Yankees. There have also been many great players that have graced a Boston Red Sox uniform including Carl Yastremski, Cy Young, Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk, Curt Schilling, Manny Ramirez and many more. So be a part of history and visit one of the oldest teams, playing in one of the oldest stadiums in the US and buy Boston Red Sox tickets today.
