Baltimore Orioles 2011 Season Preview

The Orioles are a very young team, which is why a veteran coach like Buck Showalter was critical to instill accountability and focus to the team. This payed off as the Orioles went 34-23 under Buck in 2010 and looked to have some fight in them down the stretch. Although the Orioles didn't sign anyone that could be considered an all star caliber player, they did bring in some crafty veterans that should prove to help a team with a roster in which the majority of players are under 25 years of age. Derrek Lee and Mark Reynolds showed signs of aging with lackluster seasons in 2010 and are hoping a change in scenery will help boost their stats.

The Orioles have a young pitching staff that seemed to pull it together somewhat down the stretch, and the addition of Kevin Gregg may add some experience to their bullpen. The Orioles are hoping the farm system and another year of experience will help them in 2011, the problem is, besides the Yankees, the rest of the AL East has made some dramatic improvements. A .500 season is possible for the Orioles, but they are still a couple of years, and a couple of stars away from winning the AL East.

Baltimore Orioles history

The Baltimore Orioles are a professional baseball team in Major League Baseballs American League conference in the east division. They are another one of 8 charter franchises in the American League that was created in 1901. Although the O's Orioles, Bird whatever you want to call them have their legacy in Baltimore, they haven't always been in baltimore, in fact almost half of their full existence was spend outside of Baltimore. They started as the Milwaukee Brewers, and another 52 years in St. Louis without much success, the team reach it's final and current destination in Baltimore.

The St Louis Browns had success in 1944 making it to their only world series, but during a time when a number of highly talented players were drafted into WWII. The early years in Baltimore from the mid 50's to 60's were that of disappointment as Baltimore became the doormat of the American League, reaching 500 only once and posting multiple 100 loss seasons. From the early to mid 1960's the Orioles were just missing the playoffs by a couple games and with the help of Newly Signed slugger Frank Robinson who came to the Orioles for Milt Pappas (one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history), the Orioles won their first ever American League Penant and swept the LA Dodgers to win their first every World Series title in 1966. The Orioles again won a world series in 1970 over the rival Red and their picther Pappas.

From 1966 - 1983 the Orioles became the envy of the league becoming the winningest team during that span, 8 consecutive winning seasons and it was all do in part because of great scouting and a tremendous farm system. In the inaugural year of the AL East the Orioles won 109 games easily clinching the division and advancing the World Series where they were shocked by the underdog New York Mets. The following year the Orioles won another 108 games, again swept the Twins in the ALCS and beat the Big Red Machine of the Reds to win the world series. In 1971 the Orioles would have a staff that had 4 pitchers with 20 wins and would lose a tight 7 game series to the Pirates in the world series. The next few years would show mediocre season for the Orioles culminating in another heartbreating world series loss to the Pirates in 1979. The Orioles finally made it back to the World Series in 1983 behind one of the greatest players all time for the Orioles, and one of the biggest starts in MLB history Cal Ripken Jr, they defeated the Phillies in 5 games, which was their last WS appearance.

The Orioles moved into their current home Camden Yards in 1992 and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful parks because of it's history and location. After a strike in 1994 Cal Ripken Jr. brought fans back into baseball by breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak ending his career with 2,632 straight games played, something that may not every be broken. More recently the Orioles have been subject to a very tough division and a lack of big name talent. But with the acquisition of new manager Buck Showalter, the Orioles finished very strong in 2010.
